The drama of the kitchen occurs with the 12.5 m lengthy island bench that incorporates the stair which lifts up from the center of the island bench itself, visually connecting the ground floor to the first. Visual connections and carefully positioned vistas between spaces lead you to retain looking and discovering. A potent sense of 'then and now' allows a packed appreciation of each building technology. Even the vanity mirror upstairs moves sideways to allow a view into the bedroom, and beyond. Further this approach allowed us to stretch and twist our building form to create inner courtyard spaces that allowed a far more begin gesture to the ingenious school building another major design issue was the integration of cars into the spaces. To the west we created a sunken internal court into which the cars came in an attempt to create a meeting store for the inhabitants as a first principal that also was a place for the storage of vehicles The eastern side we created an below croft into which we located the cars. We won We have been endeavoring to progress the design busy closely with landscape designers the project managers, engineers, traffic consultants heritage architects and town planners but to name a few. To that final it is a collaborative undertaking between multiplicity and Del Ogden. Cluster housing is a planning format that we trust has not been adequately pursued in recent years and has great potential to provide density housing in conjunction with unfold communal land. Giving us immense opportunity with Del Ogden as a sculptural land based artist to explore and maneuver the in between spaces from private to semi private to communal, blurring the customary boundaries that define the Australian house and land package. The conscientious interventions convey that sense of custodianship rather than ownership of this historic building. The form and materials of the fresh works both successfully negotiated that difficult balancing act between domestic luxury and the spiritual austerity inherent in a space such as this. The architects labor is superb and crafted, where they have altered the building they have done so skillfully and delicately. As a design based practice, we are very interested in the way architecture creates a sense of deposit and how interior architecture can reinterpret the role of existing built fabric. The project itself has been with our office over the course of numerous years, starting with substantial underpinning to the existing fabric. To add drama, an existing window at beginning floor smooth was cut down to ground to surgically create a fissure through which you now enter. The overall sense of intimacy and character is also healthy developed, seeming to derive from a highly episodic treatment of surfaces and encounters. Circulation planning is stiff but without losing ease of movement in entries and openings. Jury citation This work was one of a number of projects procured as a result of our former warehouse residence having been published. What they share in normal is a desire to let the inherent built fabric and spatial volumes speak, making more of less. Piece of the charm of our previous warehouse was derived from our own efforts to incorporate the embodied energy of things found but to do so with a rigorous modern aesthetic. In conjunction with this is our love of translucent and sometimes reflective materials to enliven space by the play of shadows, evidencing the passing of time and forms beyond the veil. In refurbishing our own little warehouse development a series of planar elements were impaired to define the ground floor plan enclosing the carport, supporting the mezzanine glossy and screening the beginning two stairwells. The internal environment is enriched by this spatial play as the fresh built forms juxtapose against the hard ingenious warehouse shell.
