Instead, we present you an estimate of how much the service will be based on the work and parts required for your bike. There may also be some overlap with other parts of the job, such as when a drive train (the chain and cogs) is being replaced and the cranks are being removed already. While you can arrive and see us only every 2 or 3 years, having your bike with us every 6 months, regardless of how well it is running will ensure it eternal runs well and you get the greatest life out of it and each of its components. Book your bike in for a service and make use of one of our courtesy bikes for the day. Even if it seems to be running perfectly, we quiet like to spend some time going over it to make safe everything is as it should be. A full drive train replacement is a decent sized job that is often required after about 500km of riding but there are ways to extend the life of these parts. The chain wears against the inside edges of the teeth on the cogs and each of the moving parts of the chain wears against adjoining parts of the chain. The wearing of both chain and cogs isn’t very noticeable initially as the wearing of the cogs opens up the gap between the teeth so the elongated chain can calm sit in place. Different a car, your bikes drive train is all exposed to the elements which means the lubricant (chain oil) can be washed off if ridden in the rain. Chain oils are light to penetrate the chain and restrain additives to help them stick around longer. Staying on top of chain wear can result in only needing to replace the chain and orderly the (nottooworn) cogs. To measure the wear on a chain we have tools which do it quickly, but it can be done with no more than a steel rule if you’re careful. The two oil based hubs both require sporadic oil changes.
